6th Workshop on Computational Models of Narrative

چکیده
Since narrative is a foundational framework for the on-going co-evolution of human cognition and culture, the advent of computation as a new medium for representing narratives offers the promise of ratcheting up human understanding and expressive power, just as previous media of representation like language and writing have done. But digital representation often produces artifacts that are story-like but not really stories, leaving open the question of how we can make use of computational models of narrative to expand our capacity for shared meaning-making. I will address this problem by looking at the complementary strengths and weaknesses of simulation making, game design, and storytelling as cultural abstraction systems, and suggest some directions for incorporating richer story structures into research on computational narratives. 1998 ACM Subject Classification I.2.0 General

them to entertain, communicate, convince, and explain. One workshop participant noted that “as far as I know, every society in the world has stories, which suggests they have a psychological basis, that stories do something for you.” To truly understand and explain human intelligence, reasoning, and beliefs, we need to understand why narrative is universal and explain the function it serves. Co...

Modeling and Simulation of Multiphysics Multiscale Systems (SMMS) poses a grand challenge to computational science. To adequately simulate numerous intertwined processes characterized by different spatial and temporal scales spanning many orders of magnitude, sophisticated models and advanced computational techniques are required. The aim of the SMMS workshop is to encourage and review the prog...
متن کاملComputational Models of Narrative: Review of a Workshop
On October 8-10, 2009 an interdisciplinary group met in Beverley, Massachusetts to evaluate the state of the art in the computational modeling of narrative. Three important findings emerged: (1) current work in computational modeling is described by three different levels of representation; (2) there is a paucity of studies at the highest, most abstract level aimed at inferring the meaning or m...
